Project Based Learning

            Three important things from The project based learning.

•  When project approach takes hold in the classroom, students gain opportunities to engage in real-world problem solving too.
•  Problem-based learning emerged more than half a century ago as a practical teaching strategy in medicine, engineering, economics, and other disciplines. With this approach, students are challenged to solve problems or do simulations that mimic real life.
•  Cognitive scientists have advanced our understanding of how we learn, how we develop expertise, and how we begin to think at a higher level. Fields ranging from neuroscience to social psychology have contributed to our understanding of what conditions create the best environment for learning. Culture, context, and the social nature of learning all have a role in shaping the learner's experience.

From this reading I learned that when students are grouped together for a specific project each member of the group gets an opportunity of learning in various styles. Not only do they get to learn different learning styles but they also get to engage in real world opportunities which will prepare the students for future situations.

WebQuest	Strengths	Weaknesses
Grow School Greens	It has very many different jobs that require the students to work together and collaborate with each other.	For elementary students it seem to be a little tough on them, and they will lose interest in participating within a few steps into the activity.
Where is My Hero?	It allows them to get feedback from their favorite hero and they will get some good advice of various things. Its a good tool to get students to work with people outside of the classroom.	Some students may say that their hero is someone who maybe is no longer existing and that they couldn't interview them.
Underground Railroad	It lets students process that information and lets them understand it from someone else's point of view.	12 steps for elementary students is ALOT of work them to and they may not completely understand.
Ice Cream	Exciting and fun test to that uses some thought and creativity. By using ice cream it gives the students a better and easier way to learn.	It might not be such a great tool for students because it really does not require a lot of thinking through, its a simple activity and it might be to easy to use.
Ancient Egypt	Allow the students to work in groups to create various things such as a brochure and a powerpoint so the students can learn about the project.	Have certain guidelines for the class so they can find more information.

Webquest

Three important things I learned and really grabbed my attention in the article include:

• The implementation of WebQuests sometimes falls short. So-called WebQuests may bear a superficial resemblance to real WebQuests in that students use Internet resources to produce a technology-enhanced product. For example, A team of students plans a trip across the United States and presents its itinerary on PowerPoint slides. One student might be responsible for budgeting, one for locating tourist attractions along the way, and one for booking accommodations and organizing meals.
• In a real WebQuest, newly acquired information undergoes an important transformation within learners themselves. Getting information—the “learning input”—is the easy part. The WebQuest gets trickier and more interesting in the next part, in which transformative learning takes place and teachers and students can realize—or fail to realize—the potential of a WebQuest.
• Research in cognitive psychology tells us that if we want novices to perform at more expert levels, we need to examine how experts go about their work and then prompt novices through a similar process. Teaching the writing process is a classic example.

Worth more than gold.

I think this song worth more than gold has such a true and valuable meaning to it. Not any two people are the same and that we are all created the same and that we just have different things about us that makes each and everyone unique about themselves. As the lyrics say "I know what you're feeling Words like those Won't steal your glow You're one in a million, this, this is for all the girls Boys all over the world Whatever you been told You're worth more than gold So hold your head up high It's your time to shine From the inside out it shows You're worth more than gold!" No matter what people say to you they are just words and it shouldn't bring you down. You are always worth more to someone else, even if you do not feel like it!

Learning about diversity

Learning about diversity has really made me understand the true meaning. People categorize diversity in such different but the true meaning means is really the thoughts and qualities in an individual. Diversity is very important because it shows that person unique ways because not any two individuals are the same. Diversity is a good thing in this world, because you get to learn about different people and how they may do something different from you and especially in the classrooms, when there is diversity in the classroom I believe that students have the opportunity to learn in various ways. Diversity can be a very touching subject because it can cause conflict. I think diversity is so important in todays world!

Diversity does not make us different.

Diversity, I consider it more as just a word meaning different. Diversity is a touchy subject to talk about in my opinion , it can lead to conflict and stress. I think people should label diversity as being different in your own unique way. We are all human and we deserve to be treated all the same! Every human is different and their race does not justify them.

Reading in struction for all teacehrs.

One things I have learned was about closed reading and how it is a way it helps students actually read better. Quoted from the article is the "Closed reading has been proposed as the way to help students." By using closed reading is has become students become more effective readers of more complex information. The down fall is that close reading can be defined in multiple terms for examples it can mean for searching for the hidden messages, and focusing on more formal features. Research does show that reading comprehension focuses more on complex readers. Another important fact I learned was that educators policy needs to affirm the importance of high- quality formative assessment in reading the instructions, As a future teachers I find this important because each student learns in many various ways. Ways teachers can help are by these examples: Teachers can help build awareness of their diverse experiences and knowledge because not two people are the same and getting feedback from the students can really help, the teachers help them by helping the students build on them in approaching complex texts. another example includes: Asking the students to think aloud, thinking aloud helps in many ways because when they think aloud the students can get both positive and negative feedback from their peers to help them get a more understanding on what they are doing.
  
 

 

 

 

 

 

Creating digital authors.

Important things that I have learned from the reading is that students sometimes only get to use the computer at home but that's only if their parents aren't using it , or their brothers and sisters aren't using it for  their homework. Often times the computes accessibility for students at school is also limited and even some times students don't even get to use them. I disagree with teachers who don't use computers often because students learn better with the computers is my personal opening. Another key I found important is the that digital text and tools changed the ways that we communicate with one an another."A direct implication of these changes is how children are taught to read and write for meaningful purposes." Teachers can actually navigate and compose the students through using digital text. Teachers don't have to be technology experts, but when students use technology it motivates them. "Adopting a new literates framework can help teachers and students expand their notion of literacy to include digital texts and tools." Technology has a positive affect on students and teachers technology has made writing so much easier. students have made the comment that some of them do not have nice hand writing but with the computers help it actually makes them more confident with their writing. Technology wasn't only for motivation but it was for students to cumbersome nature of hand writing even though some students had limited keyboard expertise. The most important thing that I learned that stuck out to me was that students that think they have bad hand writing like to use the computers to write because not only is it keep their handwriting nice but it also helps their writing skills. Another key point was that some students said that they have limited access to computers and not only at their homes but even school, some teachers lecture instead of using hands on by using the computers.  

Where I am from poem.

I am from a small gravel road , surrounded by trees , deer and water. From the outside of a small

town that is never bothered.

I am from a 3 story white house that smells like maple candles that sits between a gravel road and creek bank. Where we grew up making memories.

I am from the beautiful trees and leaves falling and Lilly's come spring time and the sound of a small stream that puts you right to sleep.

Family lasts a lifetime ♥

Where was the picture taken? Disney World, Orlando Florida.
Who took the picture? Selena Price.
Why were the people in the photo gathered? We took a family picture in front of the castle for a life time memory.
How are they related? Family. Mom, dad and sisters.
Why were they together at this moment? To play at a basketball tournament for my sister and have a family photo.
What were they doing? We were exploring the fun at Magical Kingdom enjoying out last day there.

My house is a previous owned house by Roger McClure , it is a country style farm house that is over 100 years old. Located in the outskirts of Mannington, West Virginia. My hollow was previously owned by John Madison the cousin of the future President James Madison.  When I look out the window all I see are beautiful trees, a soft peaceful stream, and a hollow that is gorgeous.




This is my Favorite view from our window in the dinning room. It shows the hills of West Virginia and the small stream. It shows gods creativity!

Who lived in your house with you as a child?  My Dad, mom, and little sister.

How many brothers or sisters lived there? Only one. A little sister.

Can you describe your father or mother as you remember looking at them when you were small? I actually remember the same as I would looking at them now.

Who visited your house when you were young? My family.

Any relatives remembered? Grandparents or Aunts and Uncles? I remember mainly all of my relative such as aunts, uncles, grandma and grandpa.

Who were your favorite cousins? My favorite cousins were Paige and Erin. We were always inseparable.

Who were your neighbors? Living up a hollow we had neighbors but not close enough to consider them neighbors. The Powells are the close neighbor who lives on the hill right above our house

Did you have any favorite teachers? I actually liked all my teachers the same. I never had a favorite teacher,

Who was the best cook in the family? My grandma. My moms mom!

Did anyone in the family have some unusual characteristics? Not that I am aware of.

Can you describe the house in which you lived when you were a child? A white 3 bedroom house that sat between a train track and a creek bank.
Do you remember the room in which you slept as a child?  Yes, It was a small bedroom with a double bed, one window, and a bathroom.
Can you describe the houses in your neighborhood? Lived in a little rural community with 3 house surrounding, one house was a gas station at one time, and the other house use to be a boarding house, with a little cottage. The houses varied from different sizes.
Where was your favorite place to visit when you were a child? Enjoyed going to her aunts who lived in the town of Mannington!
Where did you go to school? What was in the classrooms? Mannington from kindergarten to the 8th grade, as she was in school North Marion was being built, when she was in 4th grade North Marion was finished from that time she went to school with students grade k-12. She attended north Marion for 9-12th grade. Chalk boards, wooden and metal desk with opening that you stored your books in under the seat, coat room with a bench and if you brought a lunch you sat your lunch on the bench, She could remember having book cases full of books, projectors, maps that pulled down, abc's were across the chalk board upper and lower case in cursive, there was a carpet for story hour. We also had a record player and tape recorders.
Where did you go to worship?  Calvary Baptist church, that was right above her house.
Where did you go to shop for food or clothes? Down town Mannington, we had A&P store (grocery store) & the garden fresh store, there was a bakers, and Don Daniels had a store. Clothing varied from Hemisellos and Steve's fashion shop, and Kenny's shoe town. On occasion we would go to Hills in Fairmont and sometimes go to the mall.
Where did you go for fun and recreation?  Mannington had a movie theater, the Mannington swimming pool, Hough park, and the biggest event of the year was the Mannington District fair!
Where did you go when you wanted to hide? She never would go and hide.
Did your family ever move? No , she lived in the same house from birth to marriage. The family still lives in the house she grew up in.
Describe the house you lived in when you were first married. Small, two bedroom house, beside my parents, and they lived there a year.
What kind of utensils did you have in the kitchen? Oh my goodness, when we first got married I had just enough spoons, forks and knives and washed them every night. I really didn't have much on anything.



My mom got preeclampsia on February 5th, 1996, they put her in the hospital the same day and induced labor that next day February 6th 1996. I was originally due on valentines day. The epidural was unsuccessful , the labor did not progress, my moms blood pressure went up and I was coming brow first. So she went into emergency C-section. Before the surgery, the anesthesiologist hit the nerves in my moms back and over numbed her which caused her to feel like she wasn't able to breath. AS the delivery went on , her uterus was ready to rupture and when making a mark before the surgery  , the knife cut through my face and which caused me to now have a permanent mark on my face. Then Two and a half years later , I got blessed with a baby sister named Brittany. Before my sister came along, I had 2 cousin which were my moms brothers kids. Erin and Paige were just like my sisters! Luckily I got my very own 2 and half years later.
                                                                                                                             

Teachers are designers!

Teachers ARE designers! I think teachers are designers because to be a teacher you have got to be creative, when you make an activity more creative the students are more likely to join the fun! Being creative is very important in the teacher world! It can sometimes be a good things and often it can be bad. Each student is very different what one may think is fin the other may not think so, so being a teacher you have to get creative and think of different ways ALL the students will want to learn even if it is in different ways. I think students learn better when the teachers are creative with activities are because they are focused on what they are doing. When I was in school I had a lot of teachers who would make the activities fun and because everyone is different my teachers would have 3 or 4 activities and would let the students pick between what they wanted to do.
My experiences include:

1. Learning multiplications: My teacher would have varieties throughout of week/year. You would go to doing flash cards, to playing a fun activity with multiplication online, and play bingo and the winner would get a prize from the prize box. Winning a prize made the students in the classroom want to play so they get a toy.
2.  I was doing my senior project and I went to a physical education classroom with elementary school. I thought them about our muscles , we went to the gym and played this game where we took two blankets and had to students sitting on each blanket and they would split up into 2 groups and race pulling the blankets , after we would go to the classroom and learn about the healthy foods and eventually got to eat them after. I learned that when it comes to food and racing against each other the students are 9 times out of 10 likely to join.

I personally think students want to be more involved with activities that involve being up and moving! Being a teacher you have to become creative with the lessons because it takes a lot of creativity to come up with fun things to do!

Textbooks vs Wikipedia.

As you go through each stages of school , you will hear the word "Wikipedia" some teachers say good and some teachers say bad things about it. When we first hear Wikipedia so many things run through our heads such as good, bad, information, false information, and untrue. We all have our own opinions on Wikipedia.

Yeah, people say Wikipedia is a site that you can go through and just write something you made up , but I also believe most of the information is more correct than false. I have used Wikipedia throughout middle school to high school, and it has helped me and beyond. But then again I have also read some things that I question. For example, Ebola , IF your wanting to find information on Ebola the #1 place people say not to look is Wikipedia.The initial skepticism about Wikipedia was mainly structural: how could you trust an article in an “encyclopedia that anyone can edit?” The growing confidence in the site — certainly when it comes to public health articles — in part reflects the fact that much of Wikipedia is not edited by just “anyone.” “Wikipedia is a do-ocracy,” said Dr. James Heilman, an emergency room doctor from British Columbia, Canada, who leads the Wikiproject Medicine that keeps close watch on the most important public health articles, like Ebola Virus Disease. “Those who do the most, do have a greater influence.” Wikipedia has earned a high spot in creditable information that is true. I don't think that someone will just add random information to a website to be funny, I personally think that someone will add information about something that is true and has a lot of knowledge about something they are posting.
 Now lets talk about text books, We all have and still use them through out our lives
,they are a book full of information. "Textbooks are a core part of the curriculum, as crucial to the teacher as a blueprint is to a carpenter, so one might assume they are conceived, researched, written, and published as unique contributions to advancing knowledge".

How do textbooks receive their information? I personally think that text books receive their information the same way Wikipedia does, someone with knowledge and is very educated in what they are giving information about is writing down. Therefore I think textbooks and Wikipedia are similar in various ways.

Technology in the classroom.

 

My Argumentative Essay!

 Internet and computers do help learning in the classroom. I believe that “The personal computer can be used to amplify human potential”! I believe this because we can use the internet just about anywhere to research faster than ever before.
 The internet is helping students today because there are so many tools that helps students become better writers. For example, you are writing an essay and you are unsure of how to spell a word, we can now use spell check that actually underlines the word in red and you can just change it to the correct form!
 People believe that using the internet and using spell check is not a good tool to use in the classrooms. People actually think that it is actually making us dumb, they believe that when we use spell check and use different writing tools on the computer that it’s just an essay way to do an assignment instead of writing it in pencil and paper. But using writing tools on the computer I believe it enhances our writing skills and especially our spelling skills. Many times you are focused on what you are doing and sometimes you don’t realize you have done something wrong, but with the computer it actually shows us what we are doing wrong and corrects it, therefore you are learning from your mistakes. When you do a writing assignment in pencil and paper you just turn it in, you can look over it plenty of times and think it’s the best paper, but the only way you know is waiting until the paper is graded and getting it back. But with the different writing tools we can know what we have done wrong right in front of our eyes way before the assignment is even do.
 Computers and the internet help in the classrooms are the ways we can communicate with fellow classmates and teachers without being in the same room or building as them. We connect by using text messaging, social media, skype, face-timing, blogging, and a variety of other ways. You have a question about a homework assignment? You can simply email your teacher and ask them a question about it!
 Most teachers and even other people will argue that the internet is a bad source of communication, mainly because having the internet it gives you accessibility to communicate with someone from just about anywhere. But how can that be a bad thing? Having the capability to communicate with your classroom and you teachers can really help you with learning! I believe this because if a student’s need help they can easily get ahold of their teacher before the class assignment is due. Another example includes group work, you are paired with three other of your classmates and you are unable to meet after class, they can easily set a time and skype together and work on the project just from their own homes.
 With internet being accessible from just about anywhere, learning and doing projects is a lot simpler. The internet is such a great device for learning and communicating and it makes things more complex because we can use the internet about anywhere to research faster than ever before.
